So another thing that we get a lot of questions about is DIY solar. You know, is it advantageous to install the solar panels yourself?

There’s a lot of pros and cons. I’m going to touch on a few of those today.

DIY Solar Con #1 – It’s a Lot of Work

First off, it can be right for some people if you’re into doing those types of projects. But I would ask the question, if you needed a full kitchen remodel, would you do it yourself? If you needed new shingles on your roof, would you redo that yourself? You can save a lot of money by doing it yourself, but there’s a reason for that, and that is it’s a lot of work.

DIY Solar Con #2 – Solar is Complicated

Solar is also pretty complicated with the electrical connections and doing everything right to make sure that your solar panels are producing the amount of electricity that they’re supposed to. And sometimes the troubleshooting can be problematic if you do that yourself.

What ends up happening? The companies who offer DIY solar, one of the big reasons why they do that is because they find that most customers who sign up for DIY solar get into the project and end up calling them back and saying, hey, can you come help me with it? And then they end up installing the solar and charging them the same amount of money as if you’d had somebody install it right out of the gates.

DIY Solar Con #3 –Warranty Issues, No Guarantee

The other thing that you want to take into consideration is we have experience doing this. We have experience working with the cities, the power companies, the permitting offices, the inspectors. We offer a 25-year warranty on those products in case there are issues. We can help with warranty claims. We’re also a certified installer for the major panels, and inverters that we install. And so we get better warranties from the manufacturer because we install and they knowthat we’re going to install it right.

DIY Solar Con #4 – No Emergency Backup Power

One of the other downsides of doing DIY solaris that most solar stops working if the grid goes down and there’s a power outage. But at Smart Wave Solar, we’ve developed some technology and we’ve been granted a patent for that where we can provide you with an emergency power supply at no extra cost that’s available in case there is a blackout or power outage in the area. So you’re not going to get that from DIY solar.

But with Smart Wave Solar and our production guarantee, we’ll tell you in writing how much your solar panels are supposed to produce. And if they’re not meeting that standard, we will come out and fix it for free. We will install additional solar panels for free. We’ll cut you a check depending on what’s needed to make it right and meet that production guarantee.
